The Engagement session

How to prepare, what to expect, and a few tips from your wedding photographer.

Engagement sessions are held Monday-Thursday, leaving weekends for weddings. You'll want to schedule your session two months in advance to ensure you get the date desired.  Sessions are typically held outdoors 2 hours before sunset for lighting purposes.  If you are planning a beach session, we will only shoot the last hour before sunset because of the open sky and harsh light on the beach.

If you plan to bring a +1 (a child or pet), please allow for extra time.

1. Schedule Hair/Makeup - This is the number one regret for women on their engagement session!

2. Book Your Venue (if applicable)- Most privately owned locations require notice and a deposit.

3. Plan Your Outfits - This seems easy, but unless you are a stylist couple that coordinates daily this task should not be left until the last minute. More on that below.

4. Consider Body Care - A facial for the guys (yes, you heard right), a hair cut, and a neck trim should be considered.

1. Self-Tanner - I know what you're thinking...but I need a tan! You and me both. But there is nothing worse than looking bright orange in your photos and film tends to bring that out. It is something we pay $25/image to get retouched and that cost will be forwarded to you.

2. Being Late - We are working against the sun for your session, so we can't really go over time. Please be prompt if at all possible so you can relax and enjoy the session rather than running around trying to get enough images.

3. Stress - Avoid a debate right before your session. If you are the nervous type (and if you drink), a glass of champagne is a great way to calm the nerves and make the session feel more like a date than a chore.

What do i do with my hands???

Engagement sessions are the easiest photos you will ever take! Don't worry too much about how to pose. Just be you and let me capture how great you are together. Flirting, laughing,  and connecting like you would if you were on a date is what I'll be asking for.

a posing tip from the pro

The best engagement sessions I've ever photographed were connected to the couple's love story in some way. If at all possible, try to choose a location that means something to you rather than just a pretty background. Where you first met, the local hangout where you have Friday night date night, the spot where he proposed, or even your bright and airy kitchen if you cook together. These are all great options that will tell your guests who you are and why you love each other.

Sunset only. A private beach like Sullivan's would work best. For the couple who is not afraid to get their feet wet!

style guide

While it's great to complement your future spouse in photos, by no means do the two of you need to wear matching outfits unless you match each other on a daily basis.

Think date night. Sweet over sexy. Casual luxury.

I realize not everyone is a fashionista. Heck, most days you'll find me in a v-neck t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. But a day like this calls for upping your style game.

things to avoid

NEXT

Gentlemen, please avoid shorts, open toed shoes, casual jeans, and casual side pocketed khakis unless the location and theme are appropriate for these.  Dress as fancy as your bride-to-be.

style guide

Ladies, please avoid trying a new hair style or overly trendy choices. Think classic and timeless. The most important thing is to feel confident with flattering clothing.
